Free Team and Player Stats

When it comes to making FPL content, one of my favourite go-to websites for player and team stats is SofaScore. Not only do you have access to a range of features all in one place, from simple live scores to deep statistics and detailed player analyses, it’s completely free.  My favourite features I often use when making FPL content are:
SofaScore Attribute Overview
Heat Map
Play Areas

SofaScore Attribute Overview

SofaScore
SofaScore Attribute Overview is a graph that represents key player’s skills in the form of a pentagon chart. It highlights 5 key player attributes: Technical, Attacking Tactical, Defending and Creativity. Each of these attributes is generated on a wide array of stats.

Technical is formed around stats that cover skills related to ability on the ball. Attacking and defending attributes is self explanatory. Tactical is a lot about positioning related stats, and Creativity captures that surprise element in the game, such as key passes, through balls and so on.

I find this data particularly useful when doing player comparison content. But it’s worth noting when comparing two players your comparing how versatile they are from one another rather than determining which player is better.

Heat Map

Heats maps is graphic illustration measuring the frequency of a player in different parts of the pitch. The player’s movement is represented by different colours and depths. In areas where the player has more composure with the ball, the location gets more intense (heated). This helps you better understand what pitch areas a particular player covers. For example whether a player tends to be in opposition box the majority of time which could suggest they are more likely to be a goal threat.

Player Areas

Play areas consists of three graphics illustrating distribution of play of a particular football match. The first graphic shows distribution  of play from both teams combined, while the other two graphics represent the play areas for each team.

The three arrows indicate the side from which the team attacks.  The Longer the arrow, the higher the number of attacks.
The colours helps identify the concentration of play. If a section is greener, it indicates that the concentration of play is lower. If it’s orange, this means the concentration of play is higher. But what’s particularly cool is you can also complement the Play Areas with Heatmaps or player average positions graphs for a more detailed analysis.
